Don't have time?

If you do not have time to read the whole thing, or want to get an experience of what the first chapter is, watch Jocko's TEDx Talk below:

Thoughts

Saying a book has changed your life is not something I would ever say lightly. So I wouldn't say this has drastically altered mine, however this concept certainly changed how I approach meetings and projects within my daily life.

Through the lens training and battlefield stories, Jocko walks through how approaching things without an ego and drawing the delineation between ownership and accountability, Jocko and Leif shows what it means to own situations. Each vignettes or tableau are followed up with lessons learned, then application to business.

The application to business sections were absolutely the weakest and seemingly most contrived. However I do not think they are necessary within the book. In hearing the story and the summary, it is very obvious how to incorporate these concepts into daily business and personal life.

The chapter list alone gives a highlight into the important topics: "Check the Ego" to "Prioritize and Execute" or "Discipline Equals Freedom" to my favorite "No Bad Teams, Only Bad Leaders" and many more.

I have read this book several times and watched the TEDx talk dozens of times. I think everyone can gain some perspective from Jocko, even if the stakes are deadly in your everyday life.
